Title: Family Secret
Characters: Turnbull, Laurier
Word Count: 312
Rating: G
Warnings: None, except that my muse gets more disturbing with each day....
***
Turnbull knows about the man named Laurier. He also knows that he shouldn’t know, that they did everything they could to hide his existence from him. But he found him, quite by accident, and there’s no denying that they share their father’s genes.
Turnbull knows what Laurier did. He’s read the files, which was also sort of, but not really, an accident involving a very thorough dusting of the insides of Inspector Thatcher’s filing cabinet. He knows that Constable Fraser had a hand in his half brother’s arrest.
He’s been talking to Laurier, sometimes once a week, sometimes less frequent, as Laurier has a family of his own to use his allotted phone calls on. Family that aren’t Turnbull’s. Family that are probably more proud of his achievements, despite the illegality of most of them, than any of Turnbull’s family are of him. He’s not sure that its fair that he was the one who had to grow up with their father, but he tries not to dwell on that thought as it seems uncharitable.
Laurier’s told Turnbull many things. He knows that he should pass the information on to the appropriate authorities.
Sometimes Turnbull sits at his desk, fingers twitching to pick up the phone, to dial any one of the numbers that he has committed to memory and call himself by his brother’s name. He doesn’t know what he would do with his brother’s name, what he would say to the person on the other end of the phone. However, just knowing that he could, as long as he keeps the secret to himself, gives him a heady thrill; the thought that the world could lay down at his feet so easily just by using a different name and a different mask to the one that he wears now.
He laughs softly to himself at how easy it would be.

Date: 2007-04-02 10:52 pm (UTC)Yes, the idea just burrows into your head until you can't think any more, doesn't it? Who needs an education when you can have the gradual corruption of Renfield Turnbull?
*evil laughs, because... Well, you'll see soon...*

Date: 2007-04-04 03:55 pm (UTC)*points to icon* Laurier's from the season 1 (or 2, I think its S1...) episode The Man Who Knew Too Little. He's one of the Canadian gangsters who try to kill Ian, (and Fraser and Ray). Dean McDermott played him, and Paul Haggis liked him so much he invented the character of Turnbull especially for Dean to come back and play!
I love the idea that these two guys with the same face, but completely different ideals, could be related.

Date: 2007-04-15 09:57 pm (UTC)I hadn't read it - my hard drive crashed - and I'm glad you told me. Nothing wrong with epics, that's what I always say (we'll ignore, for the moment, the fact that I've never said it).
