Benton Fraser explains his shopping list

Kibble – I would prefer it if occasionally I could give Diefenbaker something more natural, resembling his diet in the wild. Unfortunately there are very few retail outlets in Chicago that stock caribou meat. I always check the label to make sure that there’s a high meat and nutritional content even if the food itself is manmade. Sadly Diefenbaker, whilst he will eat it, isn't very keen on it.

Asiago cheese and dill pickles – Ray often complains that this is all that’s left in his refrigerator at home but it’s become a routine for me to buy these items to make sure I have them in my fridge. Ray quite likes the odd pickle, especially a dill.

Spaghetti – Of course Ray’s mother’s spaghetti tastes much better but she makes it fresh. Mrs Vecchio has tried to teach me the skill but I’m afraid it’s not one of my talents so I use dried. Ray sometimes makes me feel guilty about this fact but he enjoys the meals I prepare for him so I think he’s teasing me.

Ingredients for meatballs & sauce – mince, onion, oregano, garlic, tomatoes – I’m fortunate Ray’s mother’s has taught me the correct way to make meatballs. She certainly has a skill. I could buy them tinned but fresh meat is more beneficial. She uses a mix of ingredients in making the sauce which does make her food very flavoursome, I confess I still have to get the amount of oregano right.

Eggs – Ray would prefer that I don’t mention the eggs but a good omelette is a meal full of useful protein. Eggs are also easy to obtain to Chicago, easier than in the Territories. They can also be used for a variety of dishes, not just omelettes.

Ice Cream – I’m afraid I can’t keep ice cream long, my freezer isn’t very reliable, but I enjoy it. It reminds me of home. Ray does get embarrassed by the time I spend near freezers in supermarkets, but he understands. He bought me an ice cube try this summer so I could use the ice cubes to cool off. He’s very thoughtful.

Lemons – I enjoy a slice of lemon with a fruit tea. Ray does not enjoy either tea or lemon.

Coffee – Ray prefers this beverage. I admit since I’ve been living in Chicago I’ve developed an appreciation for it. I always make sure I have some in stock. It’s nice to be able to share a cup of coffee with Ray.

Teas – Whilst with Ray I’m happy drinking coffee on my own I prefer a selection of herbal and fruit teas. I often serve them with a slice of lemon.

A bag of rice – My father always kept a bag of rice in his cabin for emergencies. I’ve made sure I’ve always got one in my apartment. I’ve not used it yet. Ray says one day he’ll use it to barricade the door.

Salmon – I don’t often eat salmon but it’s nice on a sandwich now and then I don’t buy large quantities. I’m slowly encouraging Ray to try it. He wasn’t that enthusiastic.

Brown beans – Vegetables are an important part of any diet. I find brown beans quite versatile. I’m hoping one day Mrs Vecchio will show me how to make pasta fagioli (as it is a favourite of Ray’s) but I suspect I need different beans for that.

Pork chops – I find these a versatile form of meat. I don’t buy many but it’s also a chance to feed Diefenbaker something more closely resembling his natural diet. Even if he does insist on having cheese on his. I blame Ray for that particular habit.

Potato ‘chips’ – I never planning on buying these but they always seem to find their way into the rest of the groceries so I put them on the list. I’m not sure if it’s Ray or Diefenbaker adding them to the rest of the shopping but they both seem to enjoy them. Even they weren’t on the list Ray would probably ask me to get some. He says it keeps Dief occupied whilst we’re….busy.

Salad – it’s always important to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. I often have salad with a stew, it’s a pleasant accompaniment. I try to buy a variety of green leaves, I think fresh is best. I don’t buy a large quantity as Diefenbaker doesn’t like salads and Ray isn’t particularly fond of it either.

Doughnuts – Another item that I blame Ray for. He uses them to distract Diefenbaker too. I don’t mind Ray having a powdered doughnut not and then it’s nice to be able to lick the sugar and jam from his fingers, even if the calorie content is higher than I think is healthy.

Candles – I’ve always made sure to have plenty of candles in case of a power cut. Lately however I’ve been getting through my supply. Firstly I used of the candles up in a rather misguided incident that led to a spell of hospitalisation. After that I bought more but used them up one romantic evening with Ray. They do make a nice table decoration.

Bulbs – I have a lamp in my apartment as well as the main lights. I try to buy energy saving bulbs but they are very expensive. Ray says I should wait until they come down in price and are more reliable. I’m not using the lights as often as I did; Ray looks quite lovely enough by candlelight.

Condoms – Well Ray and I make it a point to practice safe sex. And erm…that’s all I can say about that.

Giggle.

Oh, this is lovely. I can hear Benny throughout and it's super to see the way his mind works.

Mind you, this is really pushing even my 'outside of the box' abilities.

I think maybe 'Home' is your best bet, as shopping is a homely thing and you do refer to Benny's home several times.

Hee! I particularly like "Ray would prefer I didn't mention the eggs" and the unused but important bag of rice.

Re the rice, those things are awesome and can be kept for so very long, although at some point they turn yellow. I think tea and rice are the best because they are both things that can be stored for a long time. (I think Benny does drink coffee, but tea would be more routine, and probably more available far up in the Yukon.)
