The New Guy

The new guy’s okay, friendly enough, in a punch-you-in-the-arm, hand-on-the-shoulder kind of way. He’s caustic and funny and sometimes thick-headed; he says things to provoke people for no apparent reason. You can’t do that; you should try to get on, try to stay mellow, at least on the surface. Make friends. It gets you a lot further than abrasiveness.

The new guy’s energetic, he’ll give him that. Not afraid of a fight, not afraid to say what’s on his mind, either, though what he says isn’t always to the point. He has strong beliefs, so strong that his new partner sighs, imagining a bumpy road ahead.

Face it. It’s going to take a lot to get used to the new guy, no matter how friendly he’s been so far. He’ll have to get used to new music in the car, new pizza toppings, new slang words, new prejudices, new arguments and new info on how each likes his coffee, new decisions over who goes high and who low, who gets to drive. Like right now, sitting in the new guy’s car -- and how did that happen, anyway? He does the driving, he always did, his old partner let him, and now -–

His throat clenches unexpectedly. There’s wetness in his eyes and he turns his face to the window so maybe the new guy won’t notice.

Damn it, damn it, Louie. Why’d you have to die?

Never paid much attention to him until I recently saw "You Must Remember This" again. There's a poker scene in which everyone has a moment to reveal himself, and Louis shares a lot. It's a well-written scene.

Though clearly the writers of "Odds" forgot that Fraser had played poker before.

That's actually one of my favorite eps of Season 1 -- actually may be my favorite Vecchio episode, because he's so sweet in it. I love that poker game scene, just like I love the one in Odds, for different reasons. Or maybe I just like poker. ::Shrug:: Anyway, so glad you liked this.

I do, actually, and no one is more surprised than I. I had this burning desire to write a sweat-soaked sex scene, and ended up with this. I guess I wanted to write Huey and Dewey more than I wanted to write sex. Though maybe Huey and Dewey and.....agent Ford?

I think Huey's pain in that episode is so raw and so telling. This was a very real echo of that.

As for the threesome with Agent Ford? While I find the man attractive if annoying, that just gives me the willies. ;o)

One of the things I like best about DS is the array of secondary characters. Huey, Dewey, Louis, Frannie, Turnbull -- all of them are interesting and quirky people, and we are meant to care about them. And I do.

Huey's got way more patience than I do. Was watching an episode the other night, Dead Men Don't Throw Rice, I believe and Huey and Dewey were fighting over who drives. Poor Huey. This was so sad, Shay. Your stock's gone up another point.

Right, and Dewey gives his partner a fake steering wheel to hold, like an automotive boo-boo blanket. I love their dynamic. And I always wondered why Dewey, when we first meet him, is immediately so antagonistic to Kowalski. Hmmm....maybe there's a fic there....

I don't think Dewey is antagonistic toward Kowalski, he says something about Stella "doing" Orsini to Fraser and didn't know that she was Kowalski's ex. Or did he? I don't remember now.

It was the first scene that Tom Melissis and Callum did together. What a way to get to know each other.

Actually, soon they start performing a drag act at their comedy club, as "Dewi Decimal and her girlfriend Husetta Mouthful," then they set up housekeeping together in Cicero, where they keep pomeranians, and finally they start a combination detective agency and dating service.

And there they live, to this day, happily ever after.
