Aliens or Canadians?

Benton Fraser didn’t believe in aliens, well, not in the typical sense. After that incident with Ian McDonald he hadn’t been sure what to believe. However, he was reasonably certain that people were not being abducted by aliens and then returned to earth with their entire personalities changed. It simply wasn’t the case. There was, however, no better explanation forthcoming with regard to Ray Vecchio.

It was a build up of little things that was bothering Fraser. Ray stopping at every intersection, obeying stop signs and red lights, indicating when he turned. It wasn’t just Ray’s driving habits that had become more…polite. He had thanked Elaine earlier without a hint of sarcasm in his voice. He hadn’t complained about Dief stealing his doughnut. To Fraser, this could mean only one thing, that something was very wrong indeed.

As Ray was now in his apartment, Fraser decided to see if he could find the cause of Ray’s behaviour. It was very disconcerting to have his best friend acting as he was.

“Are you feeling all right, Ray?” Fraser asked, picking a rather obvious way to bring the subject up.

“I’m fine, Benny.”

“You don’t have a temperature?”

“No.”

Fraser reached out and touched Ray’s forehead. “You do feel a little warm, Ray.”

“I’m fine,” Ray repeated.

“Have you eaten today?”

Ray sighed. “You were with me, Benny. I ate breakfast, lunch and I’m going to eat dinner when the pizza comes.”

“Oh.” Ray had indeed eaten, and eaten very well.

“Why are you so concerned for my health?”

“I care about you, Ray.”

Ray smiled. “I know that, Benny, but I’m fine. Don’t worry when there’s nothing to worry about.”

“I’m not worrying, Ray. Well…perhaps I am a little worried.”

“Why? Do I look like I’m dying?”

“No, Ray, but earlier today you used turn signals.”

“People use turn signals all the time, Benny, doesn’t mean they’re coming down with something.”

“But you were stopping at stop signs at intersections,” Fraser pointed out.

“That’s what I’m supposed to do, right?”

“But you’ve never done it before.”

“So?”

Fraser stared into Ray’s eyes, trying to discern if he had been drugged but nothing showed in Ray’s pupils. “You’ve changed Ray.”

“Into what?”

“I don’t know, Ray, but you’re being polite.”

“And this bothers you?”

“Yes,” Fraser admitted.

“Come on, I’m not as polite as you.”

“But being polite is…it’s out if character for you, Ray.”

“Are you saying I can’t hold the door open for someone? Or say thank you when you hold the door open for me?” Ray asked, sounding annoyed.

“That isn’t what I meant, Ray.”

“You’re not making a lot of sense here, Fraser.”

“I know, but…” Fraser paused. “Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why are you obeying the highway code? It’s admirable, Ray, but what caused your change in behaviour?”

“Because it’s safer?”

“Or being polite to Elaine and Dief? I am sure they appreciate it but there must be a reason.”

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“You.”

Fraser looked puzzled. “Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“What about me?”

“I’ve been practicing.”

“Practising for what?”

“For when we…” Ray paused and reached into his jacket pocket. “Look, this was supposed to be a surprise.” Ray drew out two tickets and placed them on the table.

Fraser read the destination. “You’re going to Canada?

“No, we’re going to Canada. You and me. A nice quiet romantic break.”

“But why were you practicing? What were you practicing?” Fraser asked.

“Okay, look, every time we go to Canada we end up being shot at.”

“Yes.”

“So, maybe if I was more polite to the Canadians they wouldn’t shoot at me and we could actually have a vacation together where all we did was eat, sleep, make love and go on quiet walks without worrying about our lives being in mortal danger."

Fraser frowned. “I’m not sure that logic makes sense, Ray.”

“Have you got a better plan?”

“Perhaps if we wore bullet proof vests?”

“Oh, now you get sense of humour,” Ray laughed. “Come here.”

Fraser allowed himself to be drawn down onto Ray’s lap. They shared a kiss.

“I love you the way you are, Ray.”

“Your country doesn’t. Besides, I could get the hang of this politeness thing.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah, could come in handy.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah. Like now.”

“Now?”

“Please can we go to bed, Benny?”

Fraser smiled. “Of course, Ray, but what about the pizza?”

Ray grinned. “I’ll just apologise, later.”

Fraser couldn’t argue with that. After all, there were benefits to Ray being polite, as he soon discovered. Just as long as he didn’t make a habit of it, Fraser reasoned. His lover was an American and that was just the way he liked him.
