[livejournal.com profile] vienna_waits suggested we crib the idea of a self-insertion challenge from [livejournal.com profile] ncis_flashfic. I think it's a great plan and Mal gave us the go-ahead, so I've shamelessly plagiarised her intro post about it:
Write yourself into a Due South story. That's it. Your real self, in your real job or in your real home town or while you're on vacation, whatever you see fit. You can have a bit part, a walk-on role, or you can be a major character in the story. You can mess with the timelines, or you can write you-in-the-nineties or them now.

Maybe you're the Vecchios' neighbor, wondering why you hear gunshots coming from the back of their house in the middle of the night. Maybe your kid brother went to high school with Kowalski. Maybe Fraser rescued you when your purse got snatched. Maybe Welsh used to date your third cousin Zelda (twice removed).

You can be a crime victim, a perpetrator, a witness. A case could bring the guys into contact with you through your job. It's up to you.

But if you Mary Sue yourself as the romantic interest of one of the Due South folks? We reserve the right to point and laugh. I'm just sayin'. ;-)

It's February 20, CST -- stories are due by midnight, March 5, CST.

I notice the way you have this worded, you leave open the possibility of writing myself as the romantic interest of TWO of the DS folks...

Awesome idea! I just see them walking in the door at the hotel here in Whitehorse with the Quest (the dog race ::grins::) coming to an end this weekend.

There's some small, awful part of me that wants a dS Mary Sue challenge just like that- who can write themselves into the most IMPROBABLE and RIDICULOUS threesome with our favorite pairing? The possibilities boggle the mind.

I need therapy, I think...

Um, okay. I'll take that as an incentive to work on my other WIPs ...

Of all technical quirks, self-insertion is the one I really cannot understand the appeal of. :-/ (Additionally both my job and the place where I live are kind of hard to work into a story.)

But it means that you'll actually get that FKV schmoop I promised you over a year ago quite soon. *points to the bright side*

People did some fascinating stuff with it at the NCIS comm. My favorites were the woman who put herself on the autopsy table as a crime victim, and another who did fascinating work with herself as a crime suspect being questioned by the team. It was really cool for getting people to think outside the usual pairing-oriented box.

The thing is, I don't write about me. I? am the single most uninteresting person in the whole wide world. (I am currently throwing a pity party for myself. Seeing something interesting in me that I could work into a story is currently ... not possible, I think. :-/)

So the "Lube" challenge is being directly followed by the "Self-Insertion" challenge?

*flees, giggling*

I'm a little hesitant to try this.

"Hey, Constable Fraser, watch out for that bear trap!"

SNAP!

Oh dear, I thought. Too late.

This sounds really fun and I keep trying to talk myself into it but (and, okay, this is going to sound immensely stupid) I don't think I can write myself believable dialog.

I mean, I know what tv characters sound like. I know what friends and family sound like. Haven't the foggiest idea what I sound like.

Not that most readers would know either, I guess. But if I'm doing me I'd like to think I was doing it RIGHT.

Hi, I'm kind of new to the whole Due South fanfic thing, but this looks like it could be rather cool, so I'm going to give it a go.

CST is a few hours behind GMT right? Never could work that stuff out.

More fic is definitely always good :)

Well I've started writing mine, though trying to remember what I was like in the 90's was... entertaining :) I'll most likely aim for midnight GMT on the 5th as a deadline, just to keep things straightforward, though I hope to be able to post before then.

Thanks for the welcome. This place looks interesting :)

Have discovered the problem with writing about somewhere you have never visited, armed with only a pocket map, and some tv episodes that were actually filmed somewhere else anyway.

Do you know if there is a treeline or fencing between Washington Park and East 51st, and if you can see through to the other side of whatever divide it is? Or failing that, is there a park which looks like the one that appears in Due South a lot? I'm struggling to find any useful info online.

*had forgotten all about dues_research* Doh!

Sorry, for some reason I thought you lived in Chicago, though now I can't figure out why I thought that.

And I have another question *hides* Is it limited to one story post? Because, I've actually drafted two, and I wondered if it was ok to post both. But I couldn't see that in the guidelines anywhere.

*tells brain to stop thinking up questions*

Is there any chance you can hold the challenge open a wee bit longer? I mean, I know we haven't actually hit the deadline, yet, but I think I can safely say that I won't be quite done come midnight CST, it being one of those sorts of days. So, er, please, y/n?

Thank you, so, so much! Y'see, by Sunday? I will be on Spring break. Which, let me tell you, is way overdue.

Anyway, yes, more fic!

I have another challenge suggestion--one of the characters in the Chicago police department has to pass a physical fitness test.

Inspired by this article (http://cbs2chicago.com/local/police.fitness.test.2.671740.html).
