Rent Exchange
Fraser was shuffling, looking at the floor in his apartment and wondering what Ray would say to his revelation. It wasn't everyday he had to impart such an important secret. He looked up to gauge Ray's reaction.
Ray;s face appeared shocked. “You can't pay your rent?”
Fraser shook his head. “No, Ray.”
“Why not?” Ray asked.
The explanation was somewhat long and complicated but Ray deserved to hear it. “Well, I lent some money last week to Mr Reubens so he could repair his household appliances. I had anticipated that the various complicated regulations would have released this months pay in time for me to pay me rent. Unfortunately whilst the Canadian funds have been transferred to my account I can't access them.”
One if the drawbacks of living in Chicago was the bureaucracy associated with getting his pay on time.
“Why won't the Canadian government pay you in cash?”
Fraser knew it would make it easier but American stores didn't seem to want to take Canadian dollars as payment. “It's complicated, Ray, due to my living and working in a country with a different currency and different financial authority.”
Ray sighed and pulled out his wallet. “How much do you need?” he ask, opening it to see how much he had.
“Four hundred dollars.”
“Four hundred dollars? Is that right?” Ray asked,c losing his wallet. Apparently he didn't have enough cash.
“I only have twenty five dollars,” Fraser admitted. “Utilities are included,” he added.
“Okay, four hundred dollars. I can do that.”
Fraser was touched by Ray's quick offer. “You don't need to pay my rent, Ray. I'm sure I can come to an arrangement with Dennis.”
“The same Dennis who would cut off water an electricity if he didn't get paid?” Ray asked.
True Dennis had done that, but it hadn't been his idea. “He was very helpful during the filibuster,” Fraser pointed out.
“That was two months ago, things change.” Ray shrugged his shoulders. “I can afford four hundred dollars.”
It wasn't a boast, just a fact.
“Are you sure, Ray?” Fraser felt he was being far too willing but he could never refuse Ray;s generosity.
“Yeah. Look, I got an extra payout from the city for the Riv getting blown up. You need it more than I do. “
Fraser had never realised Ray had had another payout. It was very generous. “I can't take all of it, Ray. How much is it?”
“Five hundred dollars.”
Fraser thought it would have been more for Ray to offer it for his rent. It would be more use to Ray. “Ray, I can't take four fifths of it.”
“You're having all of it.”
Even though Fraser was very touched by Ray's generosity and he did have a warm feeling inside. However, he had been the source of Ray losing a lot of cash recently. “Ray, I'm sure you were going to do something with the money.”
Ray did another shrug, as if offering five hundred dollara was a normal gesture. Maybe that was what love meant, that Ray could love Fraser enough that finances weren't going to stand between them. “I was only going to get the Riv tuned up. Your rent is more important than new tyres.”
“I don't deserve it,” Fraser said quietly.
“You gave away your money, you deserve to get some back,” Ray said.
“But, Ray, I can't take five hundred dollars,” Fraser protested.
“So, take the four and we can use the other hundred for something else.”
“Spend it on your car.,” Fraser said, not adding that the new Riv might need money spending on it.
“Are you saying my car needs money spending on it?” Ray asked.
Fraser blushed. “Ah, no, Ray...”
“How are you going to eat this month?”
“I was going to go to the supermarket,” Fraser said, then realising that that in itself was a problem.
“And do you have any money to buy food?” Ray asked.
Ray had clearly thought about it. “Ah, well, I am sure I can release some funds in the next week.”
Fraser hoped he could anyway. He was sure that the red tape would clear in time.
“In the meantime you have no money, you can't pay your rent and you can't buy food,” Ray pointed out.
“No, Ray.”
“Benny, We'll go to the bank and get you money.”
It seemed a good idea. Fraser had another. “All right, Ray. But if you are paying the rent perhaps you should stay here.”
“Stay here, in this apartment?”
Fraser licked his lips. “Yes, Ray.”
“Are you asking me to move in with you?”
Fraser blushed. It was a big change. “It's a logical idea, Ray.”
Ray looked around. “In this apartment?”
“Yes, I know it's not exactly...” Fraser looked around. It was perfectly acceptable to him but could Ray live her?
“Hygienic?”
“Ray...”
Ray was smiling. “It's okay, I just figured that when we moved in together we'd find a place of our own.”
“Ah.” Fraser looked at Ray. It was logical if Ray was paying the rent for him to live in Fraser's apartment. That wasn't the reason though. He loved Ray and wanted to spend as much time with him as possible. He knew it was selfish but Fraser in love was selfish.
“Don't look at me like that,” Ray said. “I'll move in with you. But just for this month, for now.”
“I'll make sure you don't regret it, Ray,” Fraser said sincerely.
“But we're getting a TV, that works.”
“Yes, Ray.”
Ray waved his arms about. “And some more furniture.”
“Yes, Ray. And fresh paint and a new bed and new bedclothes,” Fraser added.
“I wasn't going to say that,” Ray said. “Okay, I was.”
“I want to make sure you're comfortable here, Ray.”
Ray smiled. “Benny, there is no way I can be comfortable in this building.”
“Oh...”
Ray smiled and out his arms around Fraser. “But you know there are bonuses. Like you.”
“Oh. Thank you, Ray.”
“Thank me when we get better furniture.”
Fraser touched Ray's cheek. “I was thinking of thanking you now, Ray. Unless you'd prefer to wait for the new bed...”
“I am not waiting that long, Benny. Besides we have to give the old bed a proper goodbye.”
“I should pay my rent, Ray,” Fraser said.
“You mean I should pay your rent.”
“Well...”
Ray kissed him. “I'd have to go to the bank first. And I am not going to the bank until after we've spent time on that bed.”
“Is that paying for sex, Ray?” A little giggle slipped out before Fraser could help himself.
“Benny!” Ray was still smiling. “Do I need to?”
“No, Ray, you never will.”
“Good, because if I'm going to live here we're going to have to do it everyday.”
“Twice a day?” Fraser suggested.
“Yeah, at least.”
As Ray kissed him Fraser felt that twice a day would be very nice. Of course if Ray was living with him there was no reason they couldn't do it three or maybe four times. After-all once they had a new bed they might as well most of it. Fraser hoped he wouldn't be able to pay his rent next month either.
