Dief remembers Benton's grim face, back in their early days in Chicago, and being told that it was "easier" for him to adapt to their new surroundings, regardless of the noise levels.

Benton thinks that life is smoother for a deaf half-wolf who can't be kept awake or be rattled by the constant roar of machines. Dief allows him to believe this, just as he lets Benton think that his fondness for city life revolves around eating the easily acquired, sugary human foods. The truth is that Dief misses the sounds that meant home: yips and howls, the rustle of leaves, the squeak of prey. Here in the south, he can feel the hum of human interaction, the vibrations of cars and steps beneath his feet but it is not the same.

Benton is smart for a human, but there are things he believes that aren't true, like that silence and solitude are always good for him. Prior to now, Benton had taken posts farther and farther north, more and more isolated from other of his kind. Dief suspects that Benton was trying to keep himself safe. Humans, after all, have ways of hurting each other that are unique to their species.

But lone wolves don't survive for long in the wild. Chicago is good for Benton, especially the loud one called Ray. Besides, one can‘t exactly hunt pizza in the tundra.

This, in so few words, is what I love about Due South. You have nailed the sweetness, the longing, the occasional snarkiness that are the true sign of the series, and of the best fic. I applaud you -- and Dief -- for getting Benton right.

Loves Dief's introspection here. Wiser than Fraser, but not telling. And still keen on pizza!

I love that Dief knows that. Yes! <3

YAY Dief! Dief is one-half of my OTP! LOL

Yes indeed, there's more than stalking donuts going on behind those wolf eyes. Love his insights in his human.

Very well done! Thank you for sharing.

I love stories from Dief's POV. \o/ The half-wolf is a lot of times smarter than his human companions.

Aw, Dief! Insightful and sweet, here, and I love that fast food isn't the main reason for liking Chicago... but it's still a good reason :)

The truth is that Dief misses the sounds that meant home: yips and howls, the rustle of leaves, the squeak of prey.
Lovely.

Aw, Diefenbaker. You are such a smart wolf.

Am I correct in assuming the 'Loud Ray' Dief is referring to is Kowalski?

Thank you.

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] exbex, I've gone and fallen in love with this snippet all over again!

My favourite quote:
The truth is that Dief misses the sounds that meant home: yips and howls, the rustle of leaves, the squeak of prey.

*pets Dief before slipping him a few slices of pizza. I don't think Fraser will mind* ;D

Oh, Dief. This right there is the reason Dief knows he has to stay with Fraser, isn't it. The the core of Fraser is always fascinating. The improbable mix of the scared, hurt little child and the no-nonsense alpha.

So yes, very nice Dief-voice. Sparse in words, yet very much elaborate. :)

*g* I like that you left which Ray Dief is thinking of up to the reader. I mean, they're both loud, and fond of pizza. These are fine things in a human companion in the city. ;D
