Admin Post: New Challenge: Sliding Doors
Aug. 25th, 2019 06:04 pmYes, the movie. Here's the synopsis from TV Tropes:
Both Helens end up in the same place, they just take radically different routes to get there.
For this challenge, you can take canon events and speculate what would happen if something were slightly different. Or you can tell a completely new story, but one that takes two different paths due to the slightest change in events.
Authors: please tag your fic with your author tag. If you are new, I will make a tag for you as soon as I get the posting notification.
This challenge will run until September 8, 2019 at midnight, Chicago time (CDT, UTC-6). Please tag your entries with 'challenge: sliding doors’. Have fun, everyone!
If you have suggestions for future challenges, please comment to the community sticky post with your idea.
Helen Quilley (Gwyneth Paltrow) just got fired. And now she missed the Tube, too. Some kid was in her way, slowing her down for a second.
But wait! She didn't miss the tube! The mother of the kid pulled the kid away, so Helen was never slowed down.
The Helen who got on the tube meets an interesting guy on the tube, and when she gets home she catches her boyfriend cheating. She breaks up and gets an Important Haircut, turning blonde.
The Helen who missed the tube gets robbed, and comes home to be comforted by a boyfriend who had more time to cover his tracks a bit. She keeps her old hairstyle and remains brunette.
As time goes by, blonde Helen and brunette Helen live increasingly different lives. And yet they seem to somehow remember each other, each of them getting a sense of déjà vu when encountering something that is important in the counterpart's life.

Date: 2019-08-27 06:18 am (UTC)My understanding was that Sliding Doors was the US/UK remake of Krystof Kieslowski's (sp?) film The Double Life of Veronique. I've actually never seen Sliding Doors (yeah, yeah, I know... I get a lot of ''whaaaaaat? You've never seen xxxx??'' for that, just like I do when I say I've never seen Titanic...).
I haven't Googled to confirm, but I remember when Sliding Doors came out (yes I am that old, lol!), more than a couple critics noted that it was the English language remake of Kieslowski's Double Life of Veronique.
Um. So. In the very unlikely, but slightly possible, as in _chances are not zero_, scenario that I might be able to participate in this challenge... is it okay if I use Sliding Doors' source material, The Double Life of Veronique, rather than Sliding Doors itself? They're basically the same movie, as I understand it. The Polish-French film may be, uh, slightly more tragic...?
Huh. It just occurred to me that, in a way, Sliding Doors is fanfic of Double Life of Veronique. Go figure!
ETA: I just realized Lola rennt/Run Lola Run may (sort of) be fanfic for The Double Life of Veronique &/or Sliding Doors, too. Like if you tagged them as fanfic, Sliding Doors would have a tag of 'Double Life of Veronique - free form' and Lola rennt/Run Lola Run could be tagged 'Double Life of Veronique - free form' or 'Sliding Doors - free form', lol!
