I survived HP5 weekend in one piece ::whew:: and had a chance to put this story to the computer (after telling
ardent_muses all about it Wednesday or Thursday night, you know, before the insanity set it :) Thank you to A for all of her assistance, beta and encouragement.

The letter read as follows:
Lt. Welsh,
At the outpost now, and Turnbull andIce Inspector Thatcher are leaving so I have to make this quick. Just to update you on what happened myself - everyone’s got their own version to tell. (Fraser’s takes almost an hour) In the last 72 hours I have: hung onto airplane wing, jumped out of the plane (actually, Fraser pushed me); fell into an ice crevasse; nabbed Muldoon; returned the nuclear sub to rightful hands and watched Mounties fall from the sky. Typical day as Fraser’s partner.
You know all those vacation hours Det. Ray Vechhio has added up? I'm taking them, all of them. He won't need them anymore and some are mine anyway. I'm gonna go on an adventure with the freak. He asked, and how could I say no? The Mountie always gets his man. I can't feel parts of my body it's so damn cold, but Ben promises to show me how to stay warm.
Not sure when we’ll be back. Keep an eye on Frannie for us, shes a good kid. Tell Dewey that stupid-ass ball and paddle thing of his is above my locker. Let him drive everyone up the wall while I’m not there. The guy thinks he’s a comedian. Ben said to tell you you were more right than you know in what you said to him about me that first day. Whatever that means.
Take care of yourself. It was an honor to work for you, Lieutenant. We'll have a beer when we get back to flat land.

Welsh smiled to himself as he passed the letter to Mort. As the coroner finished reading, Welsh fished into his pocket and set the fifty-dollar bill into Mort's outstretched palm. "How'd you know?" he asked as Mort pocketed the money.
"It was either love or it was the formaldehyde." Mort said, returning the paper.
"How about another one, double or nothing, Doc?"
"Who?"
"Huey and Dewey."
Mort laughed, and said as he walked out of Welsh's office, "Save your money, Harding, that one's too easy."

Date: 2003-06-23 11:05 pm (UTC)Thank you kindly :) I'm so happy you liked the idea, and I could see Mort and Welsh both at the precinct late one night, kvetching over coffee when the bet was made *g*
And I'll just bet Ben will show Ray how to keep warm. *veg*
Hee.
Step one: Add one Cdn. Mountie to your sleeping bag.
Step two: Generate heat with prolonged physical activity.
Step three: Remain close throughout night to share body heat.
