He watches the other children. There aren't many, and they range in age from five through twelve, but they're active and happy. The older children interact with the younger children quite freely — Brian Grafton even slows down to help retie Mary Beaton's shoe.

"Papa, let go!"

Startled, Ben releases Lisa's hand, and it's all he can do to keep from chasing after her.

"It's hard letting go," says Kathy Grafton. "On Brian's first day of school, I cried all morning."

"She'll be fine," says Ray.

Ben knows Ray is right, but he makes sure his handkerchief is in his pocket.

Ray really was okay with it. Ben's turning out to be the emotional parent where she's concerned, which kind of surprised me, but not a lot. I think he identifies with her a little too much, seeing as how they both lost their mother at a young age.
