“Ray. Ray!”

He slows but doesn’t stop. Instead, he turns around and continues backward. “What?”

“There’s no point to this.”

“Yes there is, my friend.” He winks. “Trust me.”

Ten steps later, they enter D’Amato’s Emporium, a narrow store that’s been around since the ice age. Ray pulls two from the cooler and pays the cashier before handing one to Fraser.

“Here. Eat this. You’ll feel a million times better.”

It’s too hot to argue, so Fraser unwraps the thing and lifts it to his mouth. Taste expands, explodes on his tongue. “What is this?”

Ray smiles. “It’s a Dreamsicle.”

A pair of unrelated drabbles to close out this Friday.

When the Americans finally make their move, it’s all she can do not to snipe about them taking their own sweet time. Instead, she brushes the sand from her hair and prepares to end her undercover exile. She escapes from Baghdad and is on a plane over the Atlantic two days later, when the invasion force reaches Iraq’s capital.

Years earlier, she’d said that she could never be at home in the far north. Now, however, as she leaves a sere land behind her, she longs for the pristine splendor of the Territories, of the impossible beauty of Benton Fraser.
