First Step

Ray looked around his empty apartment. His bags were packed, his furniture sold or given away. The GTO, he'd taken back to his dad. His turtle, Speedy, lived with Frannie now. He didn't need any of that stuff where he was going.

It'd been a long process even with sponsorship and enough money coming from his pension not to be a drain on society, but step-by-step he'd gotten through it all. Now he was on his way to becoming a citizen of Canada. No more visits, no more being lonely down here in Chicago until he put his time in.

There was one last thing to do. Actually, it'd been the first step he'd taken when he knew he had to do this. Ray went to the closet and reached up on the shelf and took it down. Step one: Buy a big hat. The Stetson fit his head perfectly.

Ray picked up his bags and shut the door on his old life forever. Fraser was waiting for him in Canada.

And then he shows up at the cabin, but Fraser's not home, so Ray gets comfortable. And when Fraser gets home, Ray's laying on the bed....only wearing the hat.

I think think there aren't more because it's a hard scene to capture. I got the icon probably 2-3 years ago from xtricks. So glad you liked the story.

Excellent! I love the practical side of this—fics that deal with up and moving to Canada like it's a stroll to the corner store can be a little grating after a while. But the part about being lonely and unsettled is perfect, too.

And you may have meant the Mountie-style Stetson, but the thought of CKR in a cowboy hat makes me hot. :D
