Must disagree re: Fraser saying darn. Actually, I do agree he wouldn't say "darn," but only because I think he'd say "damn." He's alone, and strongly provoked; I think it'd slip out.

Actually, there is canon for that. He says
Darn" in CoTW, when he, Vecchio and Kowalski are about to confront Muldoon in the mall. RK says "Damn," Vecchio says "Damn" and Fraser says "Darn." It's hilarious, and you have to listen to it carefully, but it's a great comic payoff.

Yup - that is one of the things I love about the show. Just about every time I watch an ep after a hiatus I find something new, hear a new line or find something silly going on in the background I never saw before. Even Dief does weird stuff I hadn't noticed.

It was Ray's file that killed me--I actually got this heavy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Ray's clearly had a hard time of it--and yeah, ok, reckless, sure; aggressive, sure; divorcing, sure--but it reads an awful lot to me like the profile of a bisexual cop, and that gave it a real depth and resonance, all the more that the words "gay" or "bisexual" or "faggot" or anything never appear in the file, nor does anything (aside from that one testimony to "mitigating circumstances") that would suggest that the 'problem' isn't Ray's fault entirely. Broke my heart, honest to God. Great work, Shay, as usual!

What wonderful comments. I am so pleased you read between the lines and saw someone who's just not comfortable in his own skin. I figure Franklin made a move on Ray at some point, and either it just ended badly or it freaked Ray out, because he was being confronted with confusing feelings.

As for the inclusion of words like "faggot," I suspect those adding to the official record of any cop, whether he was actively homosexual or not, would carefully avoid putting that in print. I actually did imagine that Ray got into the fight with the other cops because of a reputation he'd gotten with Franklin.

Yea, verily, the backstory in my head is full and rich indeed. Now if only I could keep it all straight -- er, so to speak.

One year a little too late but I think this is madly fantastic! I don't know how you can drag plot from a police *prolife* with suspense and emotion and character but right now, you could pull a story from two dry rocks in the middle of the Gobi desert and I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Fraser is so sweet (eeei!) and you do both him and Ray just right.
