"You ought to be ashamed of yourself, trying to take advantage of me when I'm in this state," Ray said, slipping one hand under the table to give Dief's nose a scratch.

The wolf groaned in pleasure, settling his muzzle deeper into Ray's knee. After a moment of contentment, Dief nosed at the corner of the paper wrapper that hung off the side of the table.

"Yeah, yeah." Ray picked the whole wrapper up, sandwich and all, and dropped it to the floor, where Dief snapped it up in two quick bites. "At least one of us should be happy."

On first look it's almost humorous. The it's kinda angsty because why is Ray so sad? Maybe it's a death!fic? Am I supposed to feel bad for the sandwich?

YES. The sandwich is the true victim here. Ray is upset because the sandwich came with mayonnaise instead of mustard, and Ray is a true believer in the power of vinegar and mustard seed.
